Support Apple by legally buying your copy of Mac OS X. Even using the Nawcom ModCD, you will still need to follow the instructions on changing the resolution of the screen as documented below as this CD doesn’t change that part of the installation process. Alternatively, you can try the iBoot or iBoot Legacy CDs if all else fails. Although, I will leave the information for the Prasys Empire EFI CDs available should the Nawcom CD not work for you. So, I am now recommending you to download and use the Nawcom ModCD instead of the Prasys EFI boot CDs listed below. The Nawcom EFI CD is much faster for installation because it does some very clever things, including installing the boot loader at the end of the install. There is a new CD image from Nawcom ( ) that makes installation of MacOS X much easier on VirtualBox (instead of using Prasys’ EFI boot CDs).

I will update this article as necessary to address a working installation of Lion as it progresses. So, for now, Snow Leopard is still it for a standalone MacOS on VirtualBox. At present, there is yet no boot loader capable of booting Lion on VirtualBox. I may, eventually, see if qemu is faster, but that's even more arcane, so it's not likely in the short term. With the recent release of Lion, there is a push to get a Lion version working on VirtualBox. In short, it does so much of what I need it to do that the commercial competitors don't have an appeal for me. I sometimes wonder if VMWare Fusion would be worth it, for the raw device support, etc., but I understand that it can be configured in VirtualBox, with patience and Terminal-fu.

For free (I, too, was tired of the "subscription model" annual upgrade pleas/threats), I really have to try to find a problem with it. Parallels seems to virtualize Mac OS more smoothly. It works well with most Linuxes I throw at it (have had some issues with Linux Mint and video drivers). I triple boot on my MacBook, but may toss that for using virtualized PCs. Two-way clipboard support just works, and the granular control over the emulated hardware (how many cores, how much RAM, what size drive, etc.) makes it sweet for testing system parameters. It's not quite as nice to configure as Parallels, but once it's running it's fantastic. What can be said has mostly been said, but I'll chime in.
